This year’s Templeton Prize goes to the Brazilian-born theoretical physicist Marcelo Gleiser. Scientific American has just published an interview with the scientist (first Latin American to get the prize) in which emerges his contribution to affirm life’s spiritual dimension. I thought I would share with you some of the passages of the interview which resonated most with me.
Marcelo Gleiser (Jewish-born and agnostic) believes that science is one way of connecting with the mystery of existence. …something part of a much grander and older sort of questioning about who we are in the big picture of the universe.
But what strikes me most is his vision about knowledge:
I believe we should take a much humbler approach to knowledge, in the sense that if you look carefully at the way science works, you’ll see that yes, it is wonderful — magnificent! — but it has limits. And we have to understand and respect those limits. And by doing that, by understanding how science advances, science really becomes a deeply spiritual conversation with the mysterious, about all the things we don’t know
In other words Gleiser warns us against scientism as a philosophical stand claiming to obtain a true theory of everything. To explain that he gives us the eloquent metaphor of the Island in a sea of knowledge
We cannot possibly ever think that we could have a theory of everything, because we cannot ever think that we know everything that there is to know about the universe. This relates to a metaphor I developed that I used as the title of a book, The Island of Knowledge. Knowledge advances, yes? But it’s surrounded by this ocean of the unknown. The paradox of knowledge is that as it expands and the boundary between the known and the unknown changes, you inevitably start to ask questions that you couldn’t even ask before.
I quite like his image of the Island of Knowledge and certainly I do not feel discouraged as though I was castaway from that extraordinary endeavour that is scientific discovery. Quite the contrary the metaphor rather instils in me a sense of deep curiosity about existence in which science can become a wonderful portal to mystery.
L’isola della conoscenza
Quest’anno il premio Templeton va al brasiliano di nascita, fisico teorico Marcelo Gleiser. Scientific American ha appena pubblicato un’intervista con lo scienziato (primo latino americano a ricevere il premio) in cui emerge il suo contributo ad affermare la dimensione spirituale della vita. Ho pensato di condividere con voi alcuni passaggi dell’intervista che mi hanno colpito di piu’
Marcelo Gleiser (di famiglia ebrea e agnostico) crede che la scienza sia una via per connettersi col mistero dell’esistenza…qualcosa parte di un piu’ profondo e antico modo di domandarsi chi siamo nel grande contesto dell’universo
Ma quello che mi colpisce di piu’ e’ la sua visione sulla conoscenza
Credo che dovremmo prendere un approccio molto piu’ umile sulla questione della conoscenza, nel senso che se tu guardi con attenzione al modo in cui la scienza funziona, vedrai che si, e’ prodigiosa – fantastica! – ma che ha i suoi limiti. E facendo questo, capendo come la scienza avanza, la scienza veramente diventa una profonda conversazione spirituale con il mistero, circa tutte le cose che non sappiamo
In altre parole Gleiser ci mette in guardia contro lo scientismo come posizione filosofica che sostiene di poter ottenere una teoria per ogni cosa. Per spiegare questa idea lui usa la metafora eloquente di un isola nel mare della conoscenza
Non possiamo neanche pensare di poter avere una teoria di ogni cosa, perche’ non possiamo neanche immaginare di conoscere ogni cosa che c’e’ da conoscere nell’universo. Questo si rifa’ a una metafora che ho sviluppato e che ho usato come titolo di un mio libro, L’isola della Conoscenza. La conoscenza avanza, si? Ma e’ circondata dall’oceano del non conosciuto. Il paradosso della conoscenza e’ che mentre si espande e la frontiera tra il conosciuto e il non conosciuto cambia, inevitabilmente cominci a chiederti domande che non potevi neanche chiederti prima
Mi piace proprio la sua immagine dell’Isola della Conoscenza e certamente non mi sento scoraggiato come se fossi un naufrago da quella straordinaria avventura che e’ la ricerca scientifica. Al contrario la metafora piuttosto mi mette dentro un senso di profonda curiosita’ sull’esistenza in cui la scienza puo’ diventare un meraviglioso portal al mistero.
