Chemistry is all around us! The Earth, the whole universe including our own bodies are fundamentally composed by just the 92 chemical elements in the periodic table. Our very experience of the natural world with its beautiful display of colors, smells and tastes is enabled and mediated by atoms and molecules. Often our relationship with the natural phenomena is one of awe and appreciation. I still remember the sheer joy when, in my analytical chemistry classes at University, assisted for the first time at the formation of the deep blue cobalt hydroxide precipitating out in its extravagant shapes in my test tube.

Now, an initiative born from the collaboration between The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Tsinghua University Press (TUP) brings the beauty of chemistry to the public. Through UltraHD camera and macro lenses chemical reactions are captured in astonishing detail giving a unique aesthetic experience to the viewers, making chemistry more approachable and lovable. Thousands of people have visited the website, and the chemical reaction videos https://www.beautifulchemistry.net/reaction has been viewed over 5 million times! I would definitely recommend watching them.

Close proximity to natural phenomena reminds us that beauty is not fashion, something that one might find beautiful today but will not find beautiful, let us say 10 years from now. It does point towards something else. Above all, it gives us a language, a space, in which we can converse with artists and poets about reality.

La bellezza nella chimica

La chimica e’ ovunque attorno a noi! La terra, l’intero universo incluso i nostri stessi corpi sono fondamentalmente composti dai 92 elementi chimici della tavola periodica. La nostra stessa esperienza del mondo naturale con le sue bellissime manifestazioni di colori, odori e sapori e’ mediata e resa possibile da atomi e molecole. Spesso il nostro rapporto con i fenomeni naturali e’ segnato da stupore e ammirazione. Ricordo ancora la pura gioia quando, ancora studente durante le lezioni di chimica analitica all’universita’, assistetti per la prima volta alla formazione del blu intenso dell’idrossido di cobalto precipitare nella mia provetta con le sue forme stravaganti.

Oggi, grazie ad un’iniziativa nata dalla collaborazione tra The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) e Tsinghua University Press (TUP) la bellezza nella chimica puo’ essere accessa dal grande pubblico. Attraverso macchine fotografiche UltraHD e macro-lenti le reazioni chimiche sono catturate con impressionante dettaglio dando un’esperienza estetica unica all’osservatore e rendendo la chimica piu’ approcciabile e amabile. La prossimita’ ai fenomeni naturali ci ricorda che la bellezza non e’ moda, qualcosa che qualcuno potrebbe trovare bello oggi e diciamo non piu’ bello tra 10 anni. Ci indirizza verso qualcos’altro. Soprattutto, ci fornisce un linguaggio, uno spazio, in cui possiamo parlare con artisti e poeti sulla realta’.
